Description
The activity in question was designed for pupils who share Portuguese as their mother tongue (Brazilians) with the aim of improving both their interactional abilities in the Spanish language and their knowledge of cultural particularities linked to the notion of time in Spanish.
The basic principle of this activity concerns comparing of the traditional daily routine in Brazil with the traditional daily routine in Spain, through a comparison of the intervals between specific activities (for example: meals, shopping, affairs, leisure, etc.)
Prior to the activity, the teacher prepares 2 sets of colored cards, printed timetables and a list of objects (models are available at the link). The timetables, printed beforehand corresponding to the number of pupils, will be used for the introductory part of the activity, oriented on improving, on the one hand, the listening comprehension of the pupils, and on the other hand, their capacity to distinguish cultures and make suggestions about a foreign one, in this case Spanish in particular.
The group of students is divided into two subgroups, which will interact in couples (one person from group A with one person from group B) so that they find out the real correlation between routines / schedules and actions in the Spanish culture. This activity offers the advantage of featuring both pairwork and collective oral interaction. The author of the activity also suggests some topics about differences in schedules of Brazilian and Spanish societies which may be presented at the beginning of the lesson with the aim of introducing pupils to the subject.
The skills implied concern listening comprehension and oral expression through interaction. The activity can be undertaken with groups of A2 level who study sociocultural aspects of the foreign language community.
