A framework of reference for pluralistic approaches

Teaching and learning materials

This database aims to facilitate teachers access to educational materials relevant to pluralistic approaches to languages and cultures. This way they will be able to help learners appropriate their knowledge, attitudes, and skills as described in the lists of descriptors. The materials, available to download, can be selected according to various criteria: objectives (as expressed by the FREPA descriptors), levels of training, thematic areas, the type of pluralistic approach, and the language of instruction.

Description
The principal goal of the activity is to make pupils of a multiethnic group aware of the differences that exist in their cultures and, consequently, in their non-verbal communication.
This activity is oriented towards students of different nationalities who share Spanish as a common language in their school context but differ in their behavioral norms. The purpose of the activity is to sensitize all the pupils to the differences they may find in comparing their own and the non-verbal behavior of others, and to make them tolerant towards it.
The preparation of the activity itself requires only a little time (a working card model is available) and it may be carried out both in an individual and a collective setting. It realization can be divided into three stages: the introduction, which consists in reading a suggesting text (available), the reflection and annotation process (1 week of duration suggested), and the discussion for conclusion.
The skills implied concern written expression and oral expression (interaction). Still, the accent is on personal reflections that pupils make about their own culture and the cultures of others, and making comparisons on their own. The activity aims to reduce cultural incomprehension and conflicts in the school context and to stimulate the students´ tolerance towards difference. This activity can be carried out with groups of A2 learners and higher levels.
