A framework of reference for pluralistic approaches

Teaching and learning materials

This database aims to facilitate teachers access to educational materials relevant to pluralistic approaches to languages and cultures. This way they will be able to help learners appropriate their knowledge, attitudes, and skills as described in the lists of descriptors. The materials, available to download, can be selected according to various criteria: objectives (as expressed by the FREPA descriptors), levels of training, thematic areas, the type of pluralistic approach, and the language of instruction.

Description
This is an activity developed during a course of plurilingualism at the University Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen, Germany. The activity comprises understanding and translating of a French song text by using one’s own knowledge and skills and by gradually adding the translations of the same text in other languages (foreign languages learned in the school context, mother languages,…here: English and German) which the pupil/learner already knows.
At the beginning the pupils/learners are requested to find out the topic of the text by looking for some key words. After a further, detailed reading activity, they are asked to note in a table all words they have understood in the French text , the corresponding translations which they know in other languages and in the last column their own observations. The table can be completed by gradually adding the English and German (or other languages) translation of the text.

Approach: 1- Intercomprehension/ 2- Integrated didactics
