A framework of reference for pluralistic approaches

Teaching and learning materials

This database aims to facilitate teachers access to educational materials relevant to pluralistic approaches to languages and cultures. This way they will be able to help learners appropriate their knowledge, attitudes, and skills as described in the lists of descriptors. The materials, available to download, can be selected according to various criteria: objectives (as expressed by the FREPA descriptors), levels of training, thematic areas, the type of pluralistic approach, and the language of instruction.

The Legend of the White Eagle III

Short description:
In this activity the students get familiarized with different alphabets (Roman, Cyrillic and Arabic alphabet), writing systems and the history of writing on the basis of the Polish legend “The Legend of the White Eagle” and its translation into six foreign languages. With a focus on the Indo-European language family and its subfamilies, the students’ attention for the common linguistic and cultural roots of Europe will be attracted. Furthermore, the analysis of negative clauses in various languages supports Language Awareness.

Description
In this activity the students get familiarized with different alphabets (Roman, Cyrillic and Arabic alphabet), writing systems and the history of writing on the basis of the Polish legend “The Legend of the White Eagle” and its translation into six foreign languages. With a focus on the Indo-European language family and its subfamilies, the students’ attention for the common linguistic and cultural roots of Europe will be attracted. Furthermore, the analysis of negative clauses in various languages supports Language Awareness.

By comparing text passages in various languages, the students learn to identify different alphabets and writings and classify them in groups. In addition to that, they reflect upon further writing systems.
In the second task, the students learn to distinguish between language families and subfamilies. For classifying the respective languages, they concentrate on similarities and differences in the texts. Finally, they create a language map of Europe.
In the last task, the students are asked to compare negation clauses in seven languages and to finally formulate grammar rules concerning their respective creation.

The students and the teacher reflect upon the tasks with the help of reflection sheets.
Languages used for the activity: Arabic, Czech, English, French, Russian, Slovakian.

Dans cette activité, les élèves se familiarisent avec différents alphabets (latin, cyrillique et arabe) et systèmes d’écriture, et découvrent l’histoire de l’écriture à partir de la légende polonaise « La légende de l’aigle blanc » et de sa traduction en six langues. L’attention des élèves est attirée sur les racines linguistiques et culturelles communes de l’Europe par un accent mis sur la famille des langues indo-européennes. Par ailleurs, une analyse de la négation dans plusieurs langues renforce la conscience linguistique.
Une comparaison d’extraits de textes dans diverses langues permet à l’élève d’identifier différents alphabets et écritures et de les classer en catégories . Ils réfléchissent sur d’autres systèmes d’écriture. Dans une seconde tâche, ils apprennent à distinguer entre familles et sous-familles de langues. Pour classer les langues, ils portent leur attention sur les ressemblances et différences dans les textes. Pour conclure, ils créent une carte linguistique de l’Europe.
Dans la dernière tâche, ils comparent des propositions négatives dans sept langues et formulent des règles grammaticales concernant leur construction.
Les élèves et l’enseignant(e) réfléchissent sur les tâches à l’aide de fiches spécifiques.
